Module 1 The Shock Phase (Level 1)

What it is: This phase is when someone receives a terminal diagnosis. Often times, there is an overwhelming feeling of shock for both the patient and their loved ones. This “shock” can present itself in many ways, such as depression, denial, anger, and withdrawal.

What you can do: It is very helpful to remember that this person and their family have just lost all “control” over the patient’s life. Telling someone that they are terminally ill and that there is no reversing the process requires those around the family to have a strong and supportive presence.

Be an incredibly good listener. Ask the family, “What can I do for you?” Allow them to give direction. This gives them back some sense of control in a time when they need it most.

Another important thing to do is to look for any immediate issues that need to be addressed. For example: safety, pain, or exhaustion (both of patients and caregivers).

Why is this important? It is vital to establish trust and security with a patient and their family at this time when their world has been turned upside-down. The best way to achieve this is through being a strong, solid support. Never take over. Meet the patient and the family “where they are” in their process and work from there. Building trust sets the tone for your entire journey with them.

Homework and journal assignments given are very personal in nature. They are meant for personal growth and enlightenment as well as professional growth. You are not to turn homework in. This is for you only.

You are required to complete all assignments in this training. If there is a particular homework assignment that is too difficult for any reason, please be gentle with yourself and do not push. This does happen occasionally and it is absolutely ok!!

Bedside Hour Requirements and Guidelines

***At this time, students with past experience can satisfy ALL their bedside hour requirements with their past patient experiences.***

You will need a total of 15 bedside hours with patients to obtain certification. This can be achieved by:

1) Using Past experiences 

2) Bedside volunteering with hospice, hospitals, nursing homes etc.

3) Virtually by being a "Tele Doula"

-15 hours
-3 patients ( at least 3, but can be more )
-5 hours per patient maximum
-1 patient needs to have you present be an active vigil sitting.
-1 patient needs to have you present for an actual time of death.
-The vigil and patient experiencing the end of life should not be the same person.

SUGGESTIONS FOR WHERE TO OBTAIN YOUR BEDSIDE HOURS

-Your local Religious Organisations ( offer to do pro-bono doula support )

-Your local Hospice Volunteer Program

-Your local Hospital Volunteer Program

-Your local eldercare facility Volunteer Program

-NODA (NO One Dies Alone) – You will need to complete your own internet search to find your local chapter.
